Semi-Inground Pools in Massachusetts
The look of an inground pool at a fraction of the cost. Semi-inground pools blend naturally with your landscape and work beautifully on sloped yards.
Semi-Inground Pools in Massachusetts
A semi-inground pool offers the best of both worlds — the look and feel of an inground pool at a price closer to an above ground pool. If you want a pool that sits partially in the ground, blends more naturally with your landscape, and provides a more permanent backyard feature, a semi-inground pool may be the perfect choice.
At Aquarian Pool & Spa, we install semi-inground pools throughout Southeastern Massachusetts and the South Shore. Our team has the experience to handle the excavation, installation, and finishing that semi-inground pools require.
Semi-inground pools are an excellent option for yards with slopes (the pool can be set into the hillside), for homeowners who want a deck-level pool, or for those who simply prefer the aesthetic of a partially buried pool.
Above Ground vs. Semi-Inground vs. Fully Inground
Understanding the differences between these three pool types helps you choose the right option for your yard and budget:
Above Ground Pool
Sits entirely on top of the ground. Minimal excavation (just leveling). Most affordable. Fastest installation. Can be removed if needed. Requires a ladder or steps to enter.
Semi-Inground Pool
Partially buried — typically 2 to 3 feet into the ground. Requires specific pool models engineered for burial. Moderate excavation. Mid-range cost. Can be finished with a deck at ground level. More permanent look than above ground.
Fully Inground Pool
Entirely buried in the ground. Requires full excavation, concrete or steel walls, and typically a concrete deck. Most expensive. Longest installation. Most permanent. Typically requires professional engineering and extensive permitting.
Important: Not All Pools Can Be Buried
Never Bury a Pool Not Designed for It
Only pool models specifically engineered and manufacturer-approved for partial burial should be installed as semi-inground pools. Standard above ground pools are not designed to withstand the lateral pressure of surrounding earth and can collapse if buried. We only install semi-inground pools using models whose manufacturer specifications explicitly allow partial burial.
During our consultation, we'll discuss which pool models are approved for semi-inground installation and help you choose the right one for your yard.
Advantages of Semi-Inground Pools
More Natural Look
Partially buried pools blend more naturally with your yard and landscape.
Deck Integration
A deck can be built flush with the top of the pool for easy, seamless entry.
Works on Slopes
Semi-inground pools are ideal for sloped yards where the pool can be set into the hillside.
Better Value
Offers the inground look at a significantly lower cost than a fully inground pool.
Deeper Water
Since part of the pool is below ground, you can have deeper water than a standard above ground pool.
Heavier Construction
Semi-inground pools are built with heavier wall materials for greater durability.
Semi-Inground Pool Installation
Semi-inground pool installation involves more steps than a standard above ground installation:
- Excavation to the desired depth (typically 2-3 feet)
- Installation of the pool walls and frame per manufacturer specs
- Backfilling around the pool walls with appropriate material
- Liner installation and water fill
- Equipment installation (filter, pump, plumbing)
- Optional deck construction around the pool
